President's Monthly Blog

Greetings!

If you are reading this blog, you are connected to school buses, either as a driver, administrator, or vendor. You also know that this is an important month for school transportation personnel nationwide! School Bus Driver Appreciation Day is October 21 and School Bus Safety Week is October 17 through October 21.

School buses are the safest and most reliable means of transportation. There are more than 2,000 school bus drivers traveling approximately 32,000,000 miles and carrying more than 170,000 students per year in Maine! Drivers in Maine have a very difficult job that they do very well! They must navigate the rural roads of Maine while transporting our most precious cargo. Their roles are essential in the educational achievement of our children.

Please take a moment and commend a special driver that you know. Today's transportation challenges require skill and confidence in order to maintain a safe environment. I found the following poem on-line that I think says it all. It goes as follows:

What Bus drivers mean to me

by Catherine Rogers

Do you know why bus drivers are special to me?
Isn't it plain to see?
Doesn't matter if you're big, tall or small,
They are there for us all!
Over highways, rural roads, and even under a tree,
Steering those big, yellow buses as safely as can be.
They will say it's not for the love of money
But for the children that makes our lives sunny.
If there is a friend in need,
Our drivers are willing to give indeed!
That is why bus drivers are so special to me!

Best wishes for a Great School Bus Safety Week!
